Short post.
Saba Man’s bento is filled with shoyu chicken, broccolini, sprouted rice, beni shoga (pickled ginger), takuan (pickled radish) and nori (toasted seaweed).
Notice that I ran out of lettuce? Also, I couldn’t find my camera so I took the photo with my phone which didn’t turn out as well as I like.
I also feel a little awkward posting a bento without mention of the Japan earthquake. But I can’t find the words. It’s all so shocking.
If you are on twitter, I recommend following @makiwi (Maki of Just Bento) as she has been translating Japanese news for us. Her efforts are incredible; timely and succinct messages that are nothing short of amazing.
I applaud her tireless efforts to pass along factual information along with personal notes. What an incredible woman.
She recently tweeted ” for bento fans: scenes of tons and tons of onigiri being handed out to survivors…”
That tweet really touched me.

Just catching up with this very simple bento from a few days ago. We both had sudden changes to our schedules so swift bento preparation was in order. You probably recognize the shoyu chicken! It’s my one of my “go-to” recipes and can be quickly prepared while the rice is cooking. I was done before I knew it!
Threw in edamame and leftover gobo kimpira and voila!
We have bento. I added furikake, yellow takuan and sprigs of enoki mushrooms to keep this lunch from being too boring.
Very rush-rush… I didn’t even bother with baran but I think it turned out okay.
Haha! Looks like I’m still on the stainless steel kick!

Our carb-fest continues!
You can make an omelet out of almost anything… why not an omu-chowmein?
Shoyu chicken and the last (for now) of the amber cup squash are perfect compliments.
And since it’s near Halloween, I placed a token “Jack” cut from a watermelon radish.
Green onions and nori provides the finishing touch.

I made a huge batch of shoyu chicken for my bento-stash. And this bento contains two drumsticks. Really!
