Summer is in session…finally. Sunny skies and warmer temps have finally arrived in Seattle!
And you know what that means? Correct. Cold noodles for lunch!
Summer is in session…finally. Sunny skies and warmer temps have finally arrived in Seattle!
And you know what that means? Correct. Cold noodles for lunch!
After packing SM’s lunch in my new Keep Cool Bento Box, I realized that not only is this box great for summer because of it’s ice-pack feature, but it’s perfect for back-to-school too!
I’m making a mental note to feature this bento in future BTS post, although this could be considered for the same…especially if your child likes what’s packed!
Today’s lunch consists of noodles in the form of Korean Chapchae, white rice, kamaboko omelet, snow peas and a pan glazed lotus root!
Our summer weather is just now starting to heat up so this box will come in handy for sure!

JaponMania -Lovely bento supplies and more!
I have a new bento box— compliments of our friends from JaponMania! They asked me to review their new “Keep Cool Palette” boxes and I of course I agreed. As a bento-nerd, I love talking about anything that has to do with bento boxes, bento-gear and bento shopping! Bring it on.
The first thing you probably noticed is that I did a charaben or kyaraben. I know, right? It’s not my usual approach for packing lunches… I’ll tell you more about this along with a special JaponMania discount later in this post.
This bento happened by accident. Well, not the act of bentoing itself, but the ingredients. The mishap is the ham-salad stuffed aburage! What?!
I made a huge batch of shoyu chicken for my bento-stash. And this bento contains two drumsticks. Really!
I’m preparing for the possible “refrigerator catastrophic failure” so the frozen foods are being utilized as soon as possible.
It’s the weekend and Saba Man volunteered to stop at the store in-between running his own errands . (isn’t he sweet?)
”What do you need?” …he had his pen poised and ready to add to his list.
“Oh… whatever you want for lunch and some tomato soup” (The weather has chilled down so I was craving soup)
“Easy-peasy” and he was out the door! Read the rest of this entry →
It was a rare occasion today… Saba Man and I carpooled! However, I’m at the mercy of his work schedule so sometimes like tonight, I’m the only one left at the office while I wait for my ride. This means I ‘m behind “bento-schedule”. Read the rest of this entry →
Today’s featured bento box contains grilled salmon patty….what? Allow me to finish, grilled salmon patty, baked falafel, sliced kamaboko, and ROASTED brussels sprouts! Were you worried?
There’s been some interest in how to slice kamaboko to look like fans. For those new to Japanese foods, kamaboko is a steamed and pressed fish cake that is usually pink and white. You can find it easily in any Asian market in the refrigerated or frozen food section.
Kamaboko is a standard garnish for noodle soups like ramen or udon. If you’re from Hawaii… saimin and fried noodles! And of course they add color and protein to any bento box. Here’s a bento from last year with kamaboko slices.
Anyway, without further adieu… here’s a short video of fan-style kamaboko slices.
