Ham Rolls Christmas Bento 10

Posted on December 24, 2010 by Debra

The last of the Christmas themed bentos!  How happy we were to receive  a tree-shaped tin filled with sweets!

Saba Man and I quickly ate the yummy contents (homemade chocolate truffles), they were scrumptious!  When the box was empty I realized  I could use this cute tree-shaped box for tonight’s bento.

A gift that keeps on giving!

So here it is…ham-wrapped string beans, inarizushi and tomatoes.

“That was easy!” :)

Hope everyone has a joyous holiday!   Peace and joy to you all!

Christmas Tree Bento 8

I did another Christmas tree bento because honestly…it’s the easiest of the holiday icons to recreate using food.

Omuyakisoba Bento 4

Posted on December 18, 2010 by Debra

The stainless steel and yakisoba love continues with this holiday themed bento.

This one is not new but it is a favorite and I suspect if we counted, this box would win as The Most Featured Bento Box on this blog!

Partridge in a Pear Tree Bento Box 10

Posted on December 24, 2009 by Debra

Today’s featured bento box is vegetarian and depicts…(let’s sing it) “on the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me… a partridge in a pear tree”.

The tree’s leaves are cauliflower and broccoli steamed with garlic and sea salt. The trunk is cut from “Field Roast”, a vegan meat substitute.  Tomatoes are disguised as pears and the partridge is fashioned by  a quail  and hen’s egg (is that ironic?) . White rice and white asparagus fills the rest of the box.

Hope everyone has a safe and peaceful celebration.  Season’s greetings!

Holiday Party Cupcakes 7

Not a bento artilce, but I worked too hard on these to not share.  I don’t bake very often, not only because of my fear of dough, but because of respect.  I compare baking  to chemistry where you have to be very precise.  Cooking  on the other hand allows many ingredient deviations and you can “get away with it”  when you’ve added too much or too little of something.  Baking is not that forgiving. Holiday Wreath Caprese Bento Box 10

Posted on December 17, 2009 by Debra

Today’s featured bento box is vegetarian and I ‘m very excited that I was able to sneak in an insalata caprese salad in the form of a holiday wreath!   I was worried that my creativity had stalled and there would be no more Christmas bento boxes and The Smallest Tree would be my only tribute for 2009.  Read the rest of this entry →

Holiday Bento Box 8

Posted on December 12, 2009 by Debra

holiday_gift_boxesToday’s featured bento box is inspired by a wonderful bentoist Texasmomof4 who recently posted a couple of adorable holdiay bento boxes using Christmas tins.  How cute is this idea?    Given that I’m a keeper of many doodahs, I knew somewhere in my kitchen, stashed away for safekeeping, there were holiday boxes stacked and awaiting Christmas cookies.  Christmas cookies that will never be baked.  Not by me anyway, because remember…I am scared of dough!

“The Smallest Tree”© Bento Box 15

Posted on December 06, 2009 by Debra

As I was packing this bento box, I thought of a story that would fit the design and layout of the food items.  After all, how would I explain the black rice, the red orb, and the really skinny looking tree!  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, those of you would create kawaii, charaben, kyaraben… bento boxes.  I am humbled.   I cannot do cute, so I  thought of a story instead and  writing it on the fly so bear with me.  It’s a short  and corny story…a quaint little tale which supports this  bento’s  design.
