How to Make Ham Blossoms
Ham blossoms! A simple way to dress-up a bento lunch without special tools. All you need is a knife!
Start with a thin slice of ham. I use free-range, antibiotic-free ham. Fold in half. If you want a fatter flower, fold length-wise.
Make short cuts across the fold. Not too deep or the flower petals will be too floppy.
Then roll tightly.
That was easy! You can either trim the bottom (like in the top photo) or secure with a pick or tie with chive or green onion as shown in the bento below.
This omurice bento also contains fried tofu, sweet potato, string beans, tomatoes, olives, and enoki mushrooms. The ham blossom completes this bento don’t you think?
Another bento using this ham cutting technique is here.
This technique adds not only extra protein to a lunch, but also color and texture. Perfect for those empty spots.

Thank you! I was just wondering yesterday how to make these! So easy it’s almost a crime.
Love it! Saw this on my facebook feed, and thought no way! Then I clicked and saw how simple it was, going to try it out tomorrow, my middle schooler just said I could try it out on her!
That’s so cool!! I always wondered how to do that!
Thanks for the tut, I have been wanting to try these adorable blossoms but wasn’t sure how. My girls will love these!
That looks ridiculously easy, and it’s cute! I will have to try this next time I buy ham.
Thanks everyone for your supportive comments!
What a pretty and flavorful ‘garnish’ … thanks for this technique! I have to tell you that I am wanting to find a bento box somewhere and begin learning bento combinations. You have inspired this ‘hick from the country’ to try something new!
