Spam Sandwich Bento
Other than my occasional banh mi lunch, this is my very first attempt at a sandwich bento! Do you think it’s a little bare? Or “bear”?
Saba Man recently won a an auction that featured a gift basket filled with goodies from our island home, Hawaii. One of the items was a can of SPAM; a staple of many islander kitchens. At first I was ready to give it away but at closer inspection it was the “low sodium” kind. So as a treat to Saba Man I decided to surprise him!
I recently acquired a cute sandwich cutter and thought I would give it a try. Unfortunately, my favorite whole-wheat bread did not like this cutter at all… and the ends didn’t seal. So note to self, always use the softest bread for this treatment!
My vision was to build a bento that looked like the 3 bears (as in”Goldilocks “) sleeping in their beds, but gave up after the bread failure. So this is it for now…a plain SPAM, cheese and lettuce sammy! With practice, I hope to do better the next time. I welcome any helpful hints from any of you cute sammich makers!
There’s also container with miso-mayo and tucked it under the mini clementine. And yes, that little cutie is smaller than the strawberry!

Eeek! So cute! I love the mini bear spam sammies, they fit perfectly into the box!
The bento is cute, but did you not cook the spam? D:
I know, I know, it’s “already” cooked!
Thanks! I usually do “cook” the spam, but I was lazy.
It’s perfect! The little peeky bears are fun! I have never actually eaten spam before :/ I am a little afraid lol
Not “bare” at all! I love the bears peeking out from the zig zag cut sandwiches! and is that a flower stamped into the cutie? great idea!
Aww…thanks Laura! yes, I did stamp/cut a flower pattern into the cutie! Thanks for noticing.
I just found your site through foodbuzz…and I love it! My husband bought me the Totoro thermal bento box set for Christmas, and it has become my favorite gift! I love your posts, thank you for sharing!
Hi Monet! Thank you for your nice comments! You’re so sweet. Welcome to our blog and please share photos of your bentos anytime with us!
Hi Debra, cool bento – reminds me of a well organised filing cabinet! I would do my filing a lot more often if the tabs were Bear heads! And why am I in love with that tiny orange!?
)
Hi Asfora! It does look like files! Haha! Thanks for loving the little mandarin!
One of the first things I noticed was that huge strawberry..lol! or that’s one of the smallest cutie I’ve seen. I actually like the low sodium spam. I think the sammys look great, not too bear…er I mean bare!
Thanks Lyndsey! This latest batch of strawberries I bought are kind of scary looking because they’re huge!
Now that you mention it I see them in their beds!
Or file folders.
Either way, great creativity!
I love your creativity
A spam sandwich
It brings back memories! When I was younger I loved it – especially when it was fried until crispy. Nowadays I still sometimes make a fried spam sandwich, but I don’t really like it unfried anymore. You, however, made it look lovely here!
oops, it took me so long to get around to commenting on this, but i really did want to say what a wonderful presentation i think you achieved here. i love the zig-zag edges and the peeking-out bears. BEARY cute!!
Hi Megan, Thanks for your nice comments! I’m going to give this sammy cutter another try with some softer bread!
