Japan Society Bento Box Entry

Posted on March 30, 2010 by Debra

Today’s bento is my entry to the “Virtual Bento Box Battle”!   The inspiration for my bento is “Japanese Icons”  Can you spot them?

Here are the icons for this bento:

1) A traditional and iconic food is nishime (shirataki noodles, mushrooms, konbu, carrots, egg).
2)  Temari balls (radish and mushroom cap)
3)  Koi keeping, and this little guy is symbolized with the “Tancho Kohaku” an icon of the koi world with it’s resemblance to the “Hinomaru”, Japan’s flag. (rice and umeboshi)
4) The koi  also symbolizes strength, courage and the ability to attain high goals. (musubi, egg whites, radish)

This koi is swimming against a strong current, pushing past the all obstacles, even ignoring his cute temari ball!

But…I have some outstanding competition… here are some other entries  that have been posted thus far.  :)

Not only is the Japan Society sponsoring this bento contest but they are hosting a day long event!  It sounds like fun and I wish I could be there to take in some of the events.

Hey, if I don’t win… I can re-use this bento for “Boy’s Day” on May 5th!
