“LOST” Bento Box

Posted on February 23, 2010 by Debra

Today is Tuesday and that means “LOST” is on tonight!  This is my first attempt at a television show bento.

I picked “LOST” because it’s chock full of zany iconic images which lends itself to cool bento designs.  If you’re familiar with this show you’ll recognize this “Swan Station”emblem as one of the multiple “Dharma Initiative”  facilities; a secret underground habitat that was built in the 1970!

Pikko, from “Adventures in Bentomaking”, and I are both “Lost-geeks”; she’s actually been on set in Hawaii as an extra!   How cool is that?   Anyway this is the 6th and final season for this compelling yet frustrating series so I wanted to do a tribute with a “flashback” to Season 1  when the “Losties” first encountered the “Swan Station”, but at the time it was only known as “The Hatch”.

What did one snowman say to the other snowman?”  That’s the question that Kelvin, the keeper of the “Swan Station”  asked Desmond.  Do you know the answer?   The “Swan Station” eventually imploded because the numbers had not been entered and Desmond did not make it the “fail safe”.

In the 2nd season… some mystery hieroglyphics appeared.  You  can find out more about these as Pikko has created a bento featuring this same cryptic message!

But on with this bento already… sheesh!   I told you we were geeky.  :P

This is a reverse soboro bento.  I put the salmon soboro as the bottom layer so that I could create this design with a white rice background.  I’m down to the final salmon patty (yay!) so I chopped it up finely and stir-fried it with ginger, scallions and  shoyu.  Easy-peasy.   Saba Man doesn’t know about the soboro so won’t he be surprised to find salmon in his bento!  LOL

Did you guess the answer to “What did one snowman say to the other snowman?”    It’s…  “Smells like carrots.”

Very cool! I love the swan in the middle! So did you know all the silly lines were in a very specific pattern when you started, cause when I did the Dharma logo I had no idea. LOL! I was like, oh crap, it’s not just lines…

    • hapabento says:

Hi Pikko, Thanks! I was familiar with the lines as they are similar to what’s on the South Korean flag. And it’s a Ying-Yang, Feng Shui thing too! I attempted to spell out DHARMA! But without alphabet cutters…. no way!

  2. Aimee S. says:

Yours is much better than mine. I didn’t even TRY to put a station logo in the center of mine but I can attest to the fact that the Dharma logo itself was time consuming and tedious to do. But worth it!!

  3. Jenn says:

Yay! I love seeing all of the LOST bento! You did an amazing job! I cannot wait to see tonight’s episode :D

  4. allie says:

that is one of the coolest bentos i have ever seen! great job!

  5. sheri says:

Excellent cutting job! I don’t get it, but it’s still very cool-looking :)

    • hapabento says:

Thanks and you know even those of us who watch Lost don’t get it either. That show is very convoluted. :0)

  6. Amy says:

Ha, I never watch Lost so I thought this was a Chinese New Year thing since it looks like the plaques with mirrors in the middle Buddists hang over their doors. Anyway that is some crazy detailed work with the nori!

  7. leslie says:

Awesome Swan Station design! All the little pieces of nori… great job. The swan is great!

  8. A friend of mine is a big fan of Lost. Unfortunately this is the last season. THe swan station design looks almost like the Chinese octagon that’s the foundation of I-Ching. At first I thought that’s what you did. lol. You have to forgive me. I don’t know much about the show:)

    • hapabento says:

Hi Tana, Yes the Swan Station does look like “Ba Gua”. The show touches on the balance of life. Good vs. Bad, etc. No, forgive ME for being such LOST-geek!

  9. Wow, you really did a good job on the Swan Station! When I first saw the photo, is a WOW to me! :)

  10. Julie says:

Damn, that looks wicked! It must have taken you a while to do that design!!
