Chicken and Kabocha Snack Bento

Posted on February 06, 2010 by hapabento

Today’s featured bento is a snack size of the “huli huli” chicken bento from a few day’s ago.    Oh… by the way… Saba Man said it tasted more like “Kalua Pig-Chicken”!   Which gives me another cooking idea eh!  But that exercise will be placed to the end of  very long line of projects waiting for fruition.

My current $avings Challenge project is coming along but I must say that it’s a tough one.  I look forward to  March 1 so I can run out and buy coffee, bahn mi, and eat at my favorite restaurants.   However it’s only Feb 6th so we are sticking to the plan.   Today’s savings will be a bit higher as we usually go out for lunch or dinner on Saturday so I’m going to mark it at $30.00 dollars!

Superbowl is tomorrow and Saba Man asked me about a football themed bento for him to munch on during the game.  The conversation went like this:

SM: “No pressure or anything… but what are you putting in MY Superbowl bento box?” (slight sarcasm)

Me: “What Superbowl box?”   “Are we going anywhere… were we invited to a party?!” (panic in my voice and I have NOTHING prepared)

SM:  “No, I just wanted to have something fun to eat a  football themed lunch.”   “But you don’t have to…”  (he’s grinning widely)

Me: “Umm…. ok”  (I had completely forgot that  this NFL holiday was TOMORROW!)

SM: “You don’t have to make little miniature Colts and Saints or anything like that.” (he’s been viewing at all the fun SB themed bentosonline, so I thought for a secong that he was serious)

Me: ( No kidding! I’m not doing that!)  ” Um..okay, how  ’bout some yummy inarizushi?  And some chicken instead?”

SM: “Sounds great and could you shape the sushi into footballs ?!”

Me:  “I’ll try…”

Then he leaned over and gave me a peck on the cheek.  ” I’m kidding”, he said.  “You don’t have to cook anything special…”   “Tuna sandwiches would work just fine.”   ( I knew this but wanted to play along)

He’s a funny guy, my hubby.   And a practical joker.   I have many other things to do tomorrow, but on the other hand since we are not eating out and I have to cook anyway… I may surprise him with some homemade sushi, but probably not in the shape of footballs!

    awww he’s so funny!

It’s nice to have him ask for bentos- I’m still trying to convince the hubs that it’s NOT insane to eat food that’s cute….slowly getting there though, thought I saw a smile when I spelt his name out on dinner tonight ;)
