Chicken and Egg Bento Box

Posted on February 02, 2010 by Debra

A super short post because I’m cooking  before tonight’s evening of television.  In case you haven’t heard, LOST Season 6 starts tonight and I only have 20 minutes to get all this done.  The rice cooker is switched on, the kabocha is roasting  and the chicken is marinating.  After the show is over… I pack the bentos for tomorrow’s lunches.

Today’s featured bento however was assembled last night; it’s a  “dry oyakodonburi”.   Brown rice topped with chicken and egg.   I  have lots of broccolini so we are sticking with that for a few more lunches and the ubiquitous  tomatoes are in there too!  The “oyakodon” as it is sometimes called is garnished with shredded green onion, nori, beni shoga and wasabi peas.  So there you go!

Oh yeah…today I saved another $35.00 towards my challenge.  See the $aving Challenge page for  the running total.  I’m extra happy with myself because  I  made the right decision  and not stop for take-out.   I wanted to pick up bahn mi and munch on that while watching LOST.  Ack!   It was  tough but I drove past the deli shop knowing that giving in would mean failure.  So here I am typing furiously before I head back to the stove to stir the chicken!

wohhhhh…. forgot about the banh mi!! Argh!!
Don’t think I could go a whole month without it!! But, then you are STRONG! Stronger than me!! You can do it Debra!
    Pulling for you :) :)

P.S. I LOVE oyakodon, and making it “dry” is a great idea.

  4. Nichola says:

Yum! Oyakodon is one of my favourites – I made it on Monday too! How did you make it dry? Just not put as much water and tsuyu?

  5. yummy and very colorful presentation – thats what i like about bento box meals. They’re too beautiful to eat… truly a work of art in a plate… U

never thought to use wasabi peas as a garnish – very cool! and i agree with the ladies above, you are so strong to resist the bahn mi urge — go debra, go debra go!

Wow your saving challenge is an awesome idea. I have been trying to stop eating out as well, it can be difficult sometimes!

  9. notabrownbag says:

I like the dry-style!! We sometimes have to tweak our fav dishes to be bento-fiable (I’m randomly creating bento words now)

And I second that – never thought wasabi peas would make such a good garnish!

  10. That’s multitasking! Wasabi peas garnish a great idea, and looks totally delish with these other flavors.
