2009 is my first year of steady bento box packing  and so this  season has been an eye-opener to the cute  holiday themed bento box!   I’m hoping with a full year of  bento box practice , I’ll be able to attempt a Christmas themed bento full of whimsy and creativity for 2010.

Holiday Wreath Caprese Bento Box 10

Posted on December 17, 2009 by Debra

caprese_wreath_pasta_bento

Today’s featured bento box is vegetarian and I ‘m very excited that I was able to sneak in an insalata caprese salad in the form of a holiday wreath!   I was worried that my creativity had stalled and there would be no more Christmas bento boxes and The Smallest Tree would be my only tribute for 2009.  Read the rest of this entry →

Today’s featured bento box almost didn’t happen.  I had big ideas on making baked lemon chicken, similar to the  mochiko chicken recipe which was done a while back.  Read the rest of this entry →

Tofurky Vegan Bento Box 4

Posted on December 13, 2009 by Debra

tofurky_bento_boxToday’s featured bento box is  another re-used holiday box.  This particular box is an especially  good one to re-use because it doesn’t have Christmas specific designs.  The box is red and the lid is a pewter color so it could be utilized for other holidays.  Read the rest of this entry →

Holiday Bento Box 8

Posted on December 12, 2009 by Debra

holiday_gift_boxesToday’s featured bento box is inspired by a wonderful bentoist Texasmomof4 who recently posted a couple of adorable holdiay bento boxes using Christmas tins.  How cute is this idea?    Given that I’m a keeper of many doodahs, I knew somewhere in my kitchen, stashed away for safekeeping, there were holiday boxes stacked and awaiting Christmas cookies.  Christmas cookies that will never be baked.  Not by me anyway, because remember…I am scared of dough!

Chicken and Egg Bento Box 5

Posted on December 10, 2009 by Debra

Roasted_Chicken_egg_bento_box

Today’s featured bento box features the last piece of 5 spice roasted chicken , a thigh.   Saba Man’s lunch needed more, so  additional protein is a triangle shaped fried egg.  There are 2 mini musubi, one wrapped in nori and the other with sesame/seaweed furikake.  Steamed asparagus, olives and tomatoes fill out the rest of box!

The egg was fried then steamed in a triangle shaped cookie cutter.   I didn’t photograph using the triangle, but  I did for a heart shape!

Basket Weave Bento Box 4

 Omelet_garden_bento

Today’s featured bento box contains “residual ingredients” from yesterday’s bento box, The Smallest Tree.  All those egg whites I used for the “snow” left some orphaned yolks behind.  What to do ?  Custard?  Nope.   Mayonnaise?  Hell no.   I’m currently reading Julie and Julia so I have a strong hunch on that potential result.  As they say on Twitter…#fail!    Failure will never be an option if I don’t evern try, right?   I’m comfortable with that choice.    So I ponder, “Will I ever add d French cooking to my ‘to do’ list?”   Hmmm…I will answer that question after I conquer my fear of dough, and that item is  near the bottom of that list.  Procrastination can be blissful.

“The Smallest Tree”© Bento Box 15

The_Smallest_Tree

As I was packing this bento box, I thought of a story that would fit the design and layout of the food items.  After all, how would I explain the black rice, the red orb, and the really skinny looking tree!  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, those of you would create kawaii, charaben, kyaraben… bento boxes.  I am humbled.   I cannot do cute, so I  thought of a story instead and  writing it on the fly so bear with me.  It’s a short  and corny story…a quaint little tale which supports this  bento’s  design.
