Holiday Bento Box

Posted on December 12, 2009 by Debra

holiday_gift_boxesToday’s featured bento box is inspired by a wonderful bentoist Texasmomof4 who recently posted a couple of adorable holdiay bento boxes using Christmas tins.  How cute is this idea?    Given that I’m a keeper of many doodahs, I knew somewhere in my kitchen, stashed away for safekeeping, there were holiday boxes stacked and awaiting Christmas cookies.  Christmas cookies that will never be baked.  Not by me anyway, because remember…I am scared of dough!

But let’s be clear about my stash.   I’m a keeper, not a hoarder!   Boxes, ribbons, and bows?  I keep them all.   Rubber bands too.  Starbuck’s plastic coffee plug stirrers?  Yes.  Popsicle sticks…. no.   And if  you’ve read my sporting event bento posts you would know that I also keep plastic take-out boxes.   I love to re-purpose stuff s0 I  just knew, that someday, even though I don’t bake cookies,  I would be re-using my stash of Christmas cookie and candy tins for something other than sweets.  Saba Man will be enjoying his lunch with a touch of holiday cheer!

Today’s box formerly held homemade truffles… made by a very talented co-worker.   Last year’s box of chocolates is this year’s bento box filled with leftover Chinese take-out!   Beef chowfun and stir-fried veggies!     If you plan to do something similar, make sure the box is food safe and I also recommend lining it with wax-paper, parchment or lettuce.   Also keep in mind  that these metal boxes are not microwavable so only pack items that can be eaten at room temperature or cold.   The larger, deeper cookie boxes are not suitable for a single person lunch,  but perfect for potluck inarizushi or fried noodles!  Do you plan on packing any holiday themed bento boxes?

Do you have a office party or school potluck to attend?   Currently, I only have  rectangular shaped holiday boxes but just think how much fun a Santa or Snowman shaped bento box would be!

You are right, great idea of using those tins as bento boxes ;) But I don’t have a single one =/ Poor student. Well, I must take my normal ones. Maybe next year ;) By the way, your bento looks delicious ^-^

Wish I had seen this before I went to he Dollar Store they had some pretty ones. Maybe I can get back there before they are all gone.
